1. The straight-line distance from Hilo to the summit of Mauna Loa is 38 miles (measured on Google Earth). By road and trail: - Drive about 40 miles up the belt road to the Mauna Loa Strip Road. - Drive about 16 miles to the end of the Mauna Loa Strip Road. - Take a backpacking trip to the summit. I don't know the exact distance, but think it's about 17 miles one-way. If you have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, you can drive much closer to the summit via a road that heads south from the Saddle Road. I'm not familiar with this access road, and don't know whether it's open to the public. If you're thinking about making this trip, get more details from the web or talk to the rangers at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
