- It's really a sweet place. Visit it if you ever can. Kilauea is considered the worlds most active volcano. It's been erupting since 1983. You can witness lava flowing basically at any time. Dark is when it's best. If you're at the coast, you'll see many streams of lava flow. Hawaiian god Pele is believed to currently live in that volcano. They believe she moves from one active volcano to the next, ever-expanding the Hawaiian islands. Kilauea is also the largest island volcano. The main part of the park surrounds the caldera, which is pretty massive. You can drive or walk around it seeing the many steam vents and sulfer deposits. There is also a hotel/restaraunt called the Volcano House. Food sucks, but the hotel is nested right at the edge of the caldera, giving you a great view. At night, you can go down to the coast built from previous eruptions. This will allow you to see lava flow. You can hike a couple miles to see the world famous lava vent, but it's hiking over really rough lava rock. It's really easy to cut yourself on the rock, and easy to get lost. The area's so massive, people have gotten lost and died. It's also rainy, windy, and can get a little cold in the higher altitudes. It rains like every 5 minutes at the coastal part. That's all I can do for now.
- I think the best thing would be to look through the Parks official website. That website can be found at http://www.nps.gov/havo/. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with unique ecosystems, and a distinct human culture. The park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes, and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.
